The Expendables 2

What can I say other than get your #$% to the theatre to see this one. The Expendables 2 is a man’s man movie with loaded testosterone and a side of whoop-ass to go with it.

The Experience

Saw this in UltraAVX at the Coliseum Theatre in Ottawa on opening night and just when I thought this reserve your own seat thing would work out, in my theatre I ended up having an insecure guy and two ladies sit right next to me when I tried so hard to get the end seat of a row with not much around me. This is where instances of the reserve your seat feature would not allow you to get up and move to another seat.

Besides that, the experience of watching The Expendables 2 in UltraAVX was awesome with the enhanced sound that brought the bullet clatter and explosions to life.

The Movie

The Expendables 2 is 1 hour and 43 minutes of action and awesomeness. Yeah, these guys are older but they still know how to make action movies. A well-rounded cast of action stars from the 80s and 90s when I grew up watching most of them in their prime.

The opening scene kicks off with insane amount of bullets and explosions. Throughout the movie it seemed like every bullet that hit a bad guy would make their head pop or a have limb explode. It was very exaggerated in the way that a bullet would explode your head like you smashed a bug with your fist, but it was still warranted for this type of movie.

The list of stars are Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Liam Hemsworth is the young guy of the bunch in this movie, but ends up being the sacrificial lamb early on. Van Damme plays the bad guy in this movie and does an OK job of it. I was expecting more fight scenes with him in it, and it seemed he was just too easy to off at the end (sorry spoiler, but what would you expect anyways). Jet Li had a smaller role in this one and wasn’t seen after the opening scene. I liked the love-hate relationship Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren had in the first movie and it was missed with this one.

This movie had some great comedic scenes as well which made the movie a little more enjoyable if you weren’t up for the action part. There are a lot of one-liners that the actors use from their respective movies in the past that made them famous. Some fun play on words as well, making pokes at each other from their past careers.

If you are bringing a girlfriend or wife to see this one they need to set their expectations low as to the quality of the story line, but they should be staying home and reading their Fifty Shades of Grey books for the 10th time anyways. Go see this by yourself or with another dude. After the movie, grab a beer, chug it and smash the can on your head and give a load yell, as you are a man and The Expendables 2 is made for men who kick-ass. Thank you Sylvester Stallone for giving this gift to all men who idealized you and other action stars in our younger years.

I give this one a rating of 10 out of 10 just because it is awesome!
